What is the difference between IDS and IPS?
An intrusion detection system (IDS) watches traffic and raises an alert when it sees an attack pattern. An intrusion prevention system (IPS) sits in the traffic path and blocks it as well. Most businesses now run IPS on the firewall, with some signatures set to alert only while they are tuned.
Do I need a separate IPS appliance?
For most UAE businesses, no. A next-generation firewall includes IPS, sized so it keeps up with your internet links with inspection switched on. We deliver it on Sangfor next-generation firewalls; Missan is a Sangfor Gold Partner.
Will IPS slow down our internet or break applications?
Not if it is sized and tuned. We size the firewall to its throughput with IPS enabled, not the headline figure, and start new signatures in alert mode for the applications you depend on before switching them to block.
Who watches the alerts?
With managed monitoring, 24/7 automated monitoring and alerting, with engineer response in business hours and agreed out-of-hours cover. Serious events are escalated to the contact you name.
Can IPS protect traffic between our own networks?
Yes. We inspect traffic between internal segments such as servers, staff, cameras and guests, not only at the internet edge, so an infected laptop cannot reach the servers unchecked.
Can you add IPS to the firewall we already have?
Often. If your current firewall has an IPS licence and enough capacity, we enable and tune it. If it does not, we quote a Sangfor next-generation firewall and migrate your rules to it.
