Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace: choosing the right platform for UAE businesses

The honest starting point

For most UAE businesses at medium or enterprise scale, the comparison is not a close call. Microsoft 365 dominates UAE enterprise IT: large organisations, government entities, regulated industries and multi-site businesses almost universally run it, and the integrations, support ecosystem and compliance tooling reflect that. If your organisation regularly works with external partners, clients or government counterparts in the UAE, the likelihood is high that the other side is on Microsoft 365.

That said, Google Workspace is a legitimate choice for certain organisations — particularly startups, pure-cloud businesses without legacy infrastructure, and those where cost at very small scale is the primary constraint. Surface-level price comparisons rarely tell the full story. The divergence appears when you account for what each platform includes at that tier and what requires an upgrade.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which many UAE organisations with real security requirements use, bundles Microsoft Defender for Business, Intune for device management, Azure Information Protection and conditional access policies. On Google Workspace, equivalent controls typically require the Enterprise tier or separate Vault and Endpoint Management licences. The all-in cost often converges or tips toward Microsoft once compliance and security requirements are properly met on both platforms.

For UAE organisations already holding Microsoft licences through a Cloud Solution Provider — particularly those on open or enterprise agreements — the commercial relationship may also reduce the effective cost of adding users compared to a like-for-like Google contract.

Security and identity management

This is where the gap between platforms is most pronounced for UAE enterprise. Microsoft's security stack — Defender, Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), Conditional Access, Intune and Purview — is integrated, deeply documented and audited extensively by enterprise security teams globally.

Key differences for UAE IT teams:

• Identity and access management: Entra ID provides conditional access policies, privileged identity management and seamless integration with on-premises Active Directory. For organisations with hybrid environments — local servers plus cloud — this is critical. Google's identity stack requires additional configuration to achieve comparable controls in hybrid scenarios.
• Endpoint management: Intune lets UAE IT teams enforce device compliance policies, deploy applications, wipe lost or stolen devices and manage BYOD from a single console integrated directly into the Microsoft 365 admin portal.
• Threat detection: Microsoft Defender for Business and Defender for Office 365 provide email threat filtering, anti-phishing and endpoint detection within the same tenant. The UAE Personal Data Protection Law requires organisations to maintain clear records of how personal data is processed, accessed and retained. Google Workspace may be a reasonable choice for:

• Organisations where most work happens in a browser and fully cloud-native tools
• Teams where real-time document collaboration is the dominant productivity need

For most UAE organisations already running on Microsoft 365, the platform choice is settled — the priority is whether the tenant is properly configured, governed and secured. An ungoverned Microsoft 365 environment with weak MFA enforcement and no Defender configuration is not more secure than a well-run Google Workspace deployment, regardless of what the licence includes.
